The Satellite Young Leader Program ran from April-June 2019 with nine young people aged 18-29 who had a parent/primary carer with a mental illness. The program aimed to develop skills in leadership, self-awareness, and confidence under the mentorship of two amazing lived-experience facilitators Steph and Addy and other program facilitators with specialist skills including Satellite and Beyond Blue Ambassador Brad MacEwan. The program also offered a warm space where young people could meet others who may share similar experiences – a place to connect, talk, reflect, relate, laugh, eat food, drink tea and just be 🙂
Topics that were covered over one evening and three Saturday workshops included leadership, conflict resolution, self-care and self-compassion, public speaking/advocacy and empathy-based communication. Since the completion of the program some of our Young Leader’s have been connected to other opportunities to extend and test their skills including Space 4 Us training, public speaking events, CHAMPS programs and peer mentorship activities such as the School Holiday Children’s Camp and taking part in community programs and forums about mental illness.
Denna, one of our Young Leader participants helped describe the experience beautifully:
“Being a part of such a wholesome, authentic & connected program, group & space was such a beautiful experience for me. I loved seeing the vulnerability, strength & growth that was evident the whole way through- from every single person in the room. Human connection conquers all!”
We agree and we are so excited that our Satellite Squad is growing and really hope and look forward to seeing/working with everyone who took part again, learning from their wisdoms and experiences in the development of everything we do in the Satellite space!
