As one of the 65 recommendations, The Royal Commission has recommended that the Victorian government support the expansion of a range of supports for young carers/children and young people who have a family member living with mental illness. This recommendation includes funding a non-government organisation such as Satellite to co-design and expand the range of supports across Victoria for young carers/children and young people who have a parent and/or family member living with mental illness. Satellite is incredibly excited and grateful to have been part of this remarkable body of work that will transform the mental health system in Victoria.

Satellite was involved in the research and hearings done by The Royal Commission in 2019 and 2020. Executive Director Rose Cuff, Ambassador Justin Heazlewood and program graduate Denna Healy each provided witness statements to the Commission. Both Justin and Denna were invited to have a one-on-one meeting with the Chair of the Royal Commission Penny Armytage. You can watch these interviews and read more about Satellite’s contribution to the Royal Commission here.

As individuals and as an organisation, we can’t wait to move forward with these recommendations. And to continue our work alongside the many organisations in this field, including the statewide FaPMI program, Little DreamersTandem CarersCarers VictoriaEmerging Minds and The Bouverie Centre.
