Kicking off Mental Health Month with creativity: a new zine + a special workshop
1 October 2025
We’ve finally arrived in October, which means the beginning of Mental Health Month.
Each year across Australia, Mental Health Month is a time to pause and reflect on the importance of mental health — to educate, to provide support, and to raise awareness so that together we can build a stronger understanding of mental wellbeing.
To mark Mental Health Month 2025, Satellite is launching a community led zine project built around how we believe mental health is best supported: through safe creative expression, connection, brave conversations, inclusivity, and community co-creation. This digital campaign will give space for authentic voices, creative sharing, and genuine belonging.
Alongside this, we’ll also host a creative workshop with our wonderful volunteer, Sami Jenkins.
Both initiatives are about creating space for young people to share, connect, and be heard — reminding us that mental health is something we all have, and something we can celebrate and care for together.
Zine: Connected Voices – Special Edition in Mental Health Month
This special edition will be created by members of the community who want to showcase their creativity and perspectives on mental health through poems, collages, drawings, photos, and more. Throughout October, we’ll be inviting submissions of artwork. To say thank you, every submission will go in the draw to win a fun prize. Submissions are open now and will close at the end of the month. Read more about how to participate here.
Junk Journalling workshop co-hosted with our wonderful volunteer, Sami Jenkins.
Sami Jenkins (aka Wiltyplant) is a content creator from Naarm/Melbourne. She makes content about mental health, community and things that you can do alone in the city. Her mission is to help locals, newcomers and everyone in between fall in love with the city she calls home, and maybe feel less alone in the process. Sami will be co-hosting a Junk Journalling workshop — a 2-hour session of relaxing, creative exploration using various materials. Junk journalling is a creative art form which usually involves making personalised handmade journals using things usually considered “junk”—recycled, repurposed, and found materials such as paper scraps, fabric, old book pages, postcards, tickets, and packaging.
All materials will be provided at the workshop on the day. Registrations are mandatory, and spots are limited. This event is for people aged 18 and over. Find out more and register for the workshop here.
