When Amanda’s life was turned upside down, her young daughter carried far more than any child should.
After leaving domestic violence, facing homelessness, navigating a difficult court case, and sustaining serious injuries that left her unable to work, Amanda found herself living with disability, chronic pain and significant mental health challenges. With little family support, her young daughter stepped into the role of carer while also coping with the trauma of everything they had experienced.
The impact on both of them was profound.
Amanda’s daughter was living with PTSD and helping care for her mum at a time when Amanda was often struggling simply to get through the day. Isolated from her peers, she felt that no one understood what life was really like.
That’s when Satellite Foundation (Satellite) came into their lives.
Through programs, holiday activities and events, Amanda’s daughter found something she had been missing: a community of peers who understood the challenges of living with family mental health challenges and caring responsibilities.
“Before, she felt like no one at school or anywhere really understood her. Now, she knows she’s not alone,” Amanda says.
With support from Satellite, the family also accessed bursaries and school grants that helped Amanda’s daughter attend a school where she could thrive. Today, she is achieving outstanding academic results and has been selected for advanced education programs.
For Amanda, knowing her daughter had a safe, supportive space brought enormous relief.
“When you’re dealing with disability and chronic pain, plus mental health challenges, it can sometimes be hard to think clearly or know what to do next. Some days, I’m just in survival mode.”
Satellite provided practical support, connection and hope for both Amanda and her daughter.
