Empowering young people like Sophia

22 October 2025

Sophia first joined Satellite at 17, taking part in a six-week program designed to help young people with caring responsibilities process their experiences creatively in a safe, supportive space. There, she found connection, understanding, and the courage to grow.

“It was kind of like a natural progression, because it was something I was interested in… I felt very supported in that environment.”

From participant to leader, Sophia’s journey continued through Satellite’s graduate program, Satellite Squad, where she accessed ongoing opportunities, resources, and community. Thanks to this vital support, she was able to nurture her leadership skills and eventually take on a facilitation role – first as a volunteer, then in a paid capacity.

“I’m really enjoying working with those that facilitated my program and then getting to explore that space… developing my skills, my confidence.”

Sophia’s experience has helped shape the very structure of Satellite’s programs, ensuring that young people are supported to step into leadership roles themselves. She believes that seeing young people in these roles helps normalise their experiences and shows that mental illness in the family doesn’t have to be a barrier – it can be a source of strength.

“My journey from participant to facilitator has informed a lot of structure that Satellite now uses… supporting participants to step into more of a leadership role.”

And Sophia is just one of many.

Because of people like you, these often-hidden voices are being heard – and they’re inspiring change at every level.
