New Article Highlights Young People’s Role in Challenging Mental Health Stigma
Satellite Foundation is proud to share a newly published article in the British Journal of Social Work, titled: “I’m just one soldier of many in the battle against stigma”: Young people’s experiences developing an anti-stigma resource.
This article explores six young participants’ “narratives of change”, one year after their involvement in the development of StigmaBeat — a youth-led, co-designed resource aimed at reducing stigma for young people with a parent or carer facing mental health challenges.
Developed through a collaborative process involving an international research team and community organisations — including Satellite — StigmaBeat represents the power of storytelling, co-design, and creativity to challenge silence and social injustice.
The research highlights the value of narrative approaches in:
- Challenging stigma and epistemic injustice
- Strengthening self-compassion and identity
- Encouraging more inclusive, responsive professional practice
Most importantly, it centres the voices of young people who so often go unheard — and celebrates their courage in sharing their lived experiences to help others.
