Helping Young Carers Build Confidence and Connection
22 July 2026
Grace could see her daughter was carrying more than most children her age. Through Satellite, she found connection, confidence and practical tools to help her feel less alone and speak up for what she needs.
While most children are focused on school, friends and play, Grace’s daughter was carrying responsibilities far beyond her years. As a young carer supporting family members with mental health challenges and neurodiversity, she was also battling anxiety and struggling to make sense of where she fits in the world.
“She was taking on a lot of caring duties at home, and we were desperate to support her better,” Grace says.
That’s when Grace found Satellite.
Starting with Satellite’s online programs and later attending camp, Grace’s daughter quickly found something she had been missing: connection. “She absolutely loved it. She engaged straight away and formed strong connections.”
With support from Satellite, she began building confidence, friendships and practical self-care skills. Today, one of the biggest changes is her ability to speak up for herself.
“I used to be the one noticing when she needed a break. Now, she recognises it in herself. She knows what she needs,” says Grace.
The impact has extended beyond home. At school, she is better able to ask for help, talk to teachers and recognise when she needs time to reset. She has also learned skills that help her support her younger brother and care for her own wellbeing.
Thanks to supporters like you, young carers can access life-changing programs that help them feel seen, supported and empowered. As Grace says, “For families and young carers, there is hope.”
