As a young carer supporting a family member with complex mental health challenges, Kai often felt alone in their experiences.

That changed when they connected with Satellite.

Through Satellite Connect, Kai met other young carers who understood the realities of caring without needing explanations.

“It was the first time I’d been around other people my age who were also carers and shared similar challenges. It was great because I didn’t have to explain myself or justify my experiences.” 

For Kai, that sense of belonging was transformative. Being surrounded by peers with shared experiences helped them feel seen, understood and accepted in a way they never had before. The friendships, conversations and simple moments of connection reminded Kai that they were not alone.

After receiving so much, Kai completed facilitator training and returned as a leader, helping create the same welcoming environment for other young carers.

“It also meant I could give back to a community that had supported me when I needed it.”

By becoming a leader, Kai became part of the network of support that helps young carers feel safe, included and valued. It was an opportunity not only to support others, but to grow in confidence and strengthen their own connection.

Today, Kai still carries the responsibilities of caring, but they also carry something else: the knowledge that they are not alone.
