“I don’t want them to underestimate the impact.” – Dee 

As a young carer, Dee spent her teenage years carrying responsibilities far beyond her age. She hid her struggles from friends and tried to appear fine, even when life felt overwhelming. “I was living one life at home and another life at school,” she recalls. “School was my safe space and sanctuary.”

Finding Satellite at 20 was, in her words, “a very pivotal moment in my life… I remember thinking to myself, I can’t believe I had not heard about this kind of support [at 15], when I needed it so much!”

Before Satellite, every service Dee encountered felt heavy and clinical. Satellite was different. “Re-learning creativity, fun and play was so important,” Dee shares. “As young carers, things tend to be so serious most of the time.”

Programs like leadership workshops and camps helped her find community and make sense of her experiences. “I didn’t have to hide it anymore – I felt like I could just be myself,” Dee shares. “Previously, I had felt I needed to protect my parents and entire family.”

Today, Dee is a social worker, an advocate, and a powerful voice for young carers. She wants donors to know their impact is profound: “Even the smallest of programs …can be absolutely life-changing to a young person. I don’t want them to underestimate the impact.”
