Identifying who can be referred to Satellite
Satellite has recently developed a flowchart to assist referrers in understanding whether our support is appropriate for a child or young person.
Across Victoria, many young people with caring responsibilities (often referred to as young carers) are unidentified, and there are many reasons why a young person or family may be reluctant to disclose their experience. This includes but is not limited to:
- Fearing that speaking up may impact their family through stigma and discrimination
- The young person and family seeing caring as just part of what they do, particularly when emotionally caring for loved ones
- Cultural traditions and expectations around caring reinforcing the normalisation of the caring role
- A reluctance to burden others
- Being previously let down when reaching out for help
- Accessibility barriers
- Service providers lacking awareness of young carers
At Satellite, we specifically shine a light on children and young people living with a family member with a mental health challenge.
Some of these young people may have caring responsibilities. Providing care can be a challenging and stressful role, particularly for young people who are juggling multiple responsibilities like school, work, and social activities. It is essential that they receive adequate support and resources to help them manage their role effectively, whilst also maintaining their own health and wellbeing.
This flowchart is a reminder for you to see the child and young person. Then consider if Satellite is an option for them.
