From Isolation to Advocacy
21 October 2026
When young carer Anna first connected with Satellite Foundation, her world had become very small.
Fresh out of high school, she was navigating trauma, mental health challenges, the effects of bullying, and feelings of shame about living with a disability. She spent most of her time at home and felt disconnected from the world around her.
Then she found Satellite Connect.
Thanks to generous supporters, Anna was able to access a program that removed barriers to participation and created a welcoming environment where she could simply be herself. Through online programs, creative activities, peer connection and opportunities to share lived experiences, she found a community that understood her.
“I went into that space and felt safe.”
As Anna became more involved, she was surrounded by supportive staff, peers and mentors who encouraged her to recognise her strengths and potential. Their example had a lasting impact.
“The role modelling I experienced showed me that people like me could achieve great things too.”
That sense of possibility helped Anna begin to see a different future for herself. What started as participation in a program grew into opportunities to contribute to interview panels and consultations, take on paid roles, join advisory groups, and step into advocacy and facilitation positions.
Eventually, Anna spoke at Parliament, using her voice to help create change for others.
Today, Anna is building strong friendships, developing healthy relationships, and embracing her identity as a young carer with greater resilience, self-compassion and confidence.
