Co-creation at Satellite
At Satellite, co-creation is a term that covers several different ways young people and/or families shape and influence what we do.
We would like to introduce you to “FRAGMENTS” by Satellite Foundation, an original song co-created by young people in our recent Songwriting workshop as part of the ‘At Home with Satellite’ Program.
“FRAGMENTS” celebrates the unique experiences, strengths, and resilience young people face when living within families experiencing mental health challenges. It’s also a testament to the power of music therapy and the way in which this creative practice positively influences mental health and wellbeing.
The song was co-created by musician and educator, Sierra Verity-Beasley of Resound Music Therapy and young people aged 12 – 14 from the Satellite community.
Sierra had this to say:
“We didn’t know what the song would sound like before we started, but through song sharing, games, discussions, ideas and a lot of jokes…’Fragments’ emerged. Whether it was by adding lyrics, thinking up musical ideas or getting creative with the album cover, everyone contributed in a way that worked for them. What I love most is that the creativity and humour of all the amazing participants really shines through!”
We hope you enjoy this as much as we do!
Lights
Through red cups
And water bottles
You never know
What will show
Sometimes a glow stick needs to break before it can glow
I built this friendship
Kept me afloat
Yellow to blue
Then it rocked the boat
Clouds swarming waves crashing I’m drowning, I’m drowning with
Nowhere to go
These changes got me frowning
Chorus:
A sparkle,
behind the cloud
I find new colours when you’re around
I find new colours
I find new colours
(Now) I’m feeling proud
(I’ll) say it out loud
If only
We had an app
To control
All our feelings
To change our colours
To make our meaning
Chorus:
A sparkle,
behind the cloud
I find new colours when you’re around
I find new colours
I find new colours
(Now) I’m feeling proud
(I’ll) say it out loud
Outro: A chicken nugget of wisdom before we’re done;
They say you have to be odd to be number one,
But when a rainbow appears, play your kazoo.
Nothing odd about a rainbow just your point of view.
We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land we live, work and create on, and pay our respects to Elders past and present.
We acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded.
Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.
